Venturing off the tourist trail, this tour visits northern Peru, where you can discover the wealth of history displayed by the pre-Inca Moche, Chimu and Chachapoya cultures, as well as explore colonial cities, including Trujillo and Cajamarca, and natural wonders such as the Gocta Falls.
From Lima, fly to Jaen. Drive to Chachapoyas, a colonial town surrounded by swathes of high-altitude cloud forests. The Chachapoya civilisation had a culture that fiercely rivalled the Incas. Stay for 2 nights. (N)
Travel to Kuelap fortress and explore one of the largest ancient sites of the Americas, situated on a mountain ridge. (B, L)
Visit the mysterious sarcophagi of Karajia, an ancient funerary site of the Chachapoyas. Continue to Gocta Falls and stay at a nearby lodge for 2 nights. The lodges enjoys spectacular views of the Gocta Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in the world and until recently unknown outside the local area. Take a hike to the base of the falls and relax in serene surroundings. (B, L, D)
Take a full-day drive towards the coast to Chiclayo and visit one
of the excellent museums, such as the Museum
of the Royal Tombs of Sipan. Overnight stay. (B)
Continue to Trujillo, visiting the mystical El Brujo
pyramid complex and the Lady of Cao museum
en route. Stay 2 nights in Trujillo and explore the Sun and Moon pyramids
and the adobe city of Chan Chan. (B)
