Full-day tour of Delhi. You will begin by visiting some of the most renowned sights of New Delhi including India Gate, the President's Palace, the pre-Mughal monuments and the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun . This afternoon, your visit will continue to Old Delhi to see the Red Fort, once the most opulent fort of the Mughal Empire, the Jama Masjid Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and Raj Ghat, the location of Gandhi's cremation. Morning train to Lucknow, of which Kipling said "no city - except Bombay, the Queen of all - was more beautiful in her garish style than Lucknow." Arrive and transfer to the Vivanta by Taj - Gomti Nagar for stay of 2 nights. (B)
Morning tour of a city that is a unique fusion of Indian and European styles. This tour includes the Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara, both fine examples of late Moghul tomb architecture. The Raj era bequeathed Lucknow many fine colonial monuments including the British Residency and La Martiniere College, which are also included in this city tour. (B)
Train to Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world. Stay for 2 nights at Radisson Varanasi. Evening visit to the ghats for the Aarti ceremony. This beautiful ceremony is part of the evening puja, or prayers. As the atmospheric ceremony gets underway, priests stand on platforms, incense sticks are lit and conch shells are blown. It is a moving sight to watch hundreds of miniature lamps float along the sacred Ganges. (B)
Take an early morning boat ride and see the famous bathing 'ghats', the stone steps which lead down to the river where the gathered faithful ritually cleanse themselves. Later, visit Sarnath where it is said Buddha preached his first sermon, setting in motion the Wheel of Law. (B)
Fly to Khajuraho. Afternoon visit to the Chandela temples famed for their exquisite carvings and erotic sculptures. Stay overnight at the Chandela Hotel. (B)
Drive to Jhansi via Orchha . Visit temples such as the Chatrabhuj and Lakshmi Narayan, along with the Jehangir Mahal Palace, Take the train from Jhansi to Agra and stay 2 nights at the Radisson Agra. (B)
Full-day tour of Agra. Today, you will visit the sights of Agra, including its impressive Agra Fort, the local bazaar and, the highlight of the tour, the Taj Mahal, built in 1632 as a monument to Shah Jahan's wife, Mumtaz. You will also visit the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, a building coated in white marble and displaying very detailed pietra dura inlay.
