Discover the impressive cultural heritage
of Lisbon and Sintra through Romantic
palaces, azulejo tiles and outstanding
art collections, travelling with expert
art historian Dr Anne Anderson. Lisbon
was the starting point for voyages of
discovery in the 14th to 15th centuries
and many cultural treasures returned
with the explorers. This Golden Age
produced the distinct Manueline
architecture, which contrasts with earlier
romanesque and Renaissance churches.
A melting-pot of cultural influences,
Lisbon and its surrounds remain a
treasure trove of artistic wonders.
Morning flight from London (regional
connections available) to Lisbon with TAP
and transfer to your hotel. After a welcome
lunch, take a walking tour to discover
Lisbon’s illustrious history. Visit the Church
of St Roch, Carmo Convent, the Castle of
St Jorge and Dom Pedro IV Square. Stay
3 nights at Hotel Altis Grand (or similar),
centrally located near the elegant Avenida
da Liberdade. (L)
Full-day tour to Sintra, a Unesco world heritage
site that was home to the Portuguese royal
family. The Romantic Pena National Palace,
perched on a hill overlooking the town,
has a profusion of eclectic styles. Nearby is
Monserrate Palace, an exotic palatial villa that
was the traditional summer residence of the
Portuguese court. End the day at Sintra National
Palace, the best-preserved medieval royal palace
in Portugal. (B)
This morning visit the National Museum of
Ancient Art. Housed in a former palace of the
Count of Alvor, the museum contains works
from the middle ages to the early 19th century,
showing the history of Portuguese painting,
sculpture and metalwork. Continue to the area
of Belem at the mouth of the River Tagus. The
Monastery of San Jeronimos is one of the most
prominent examples of the Portuguese late
gothic Manueline style. In the afternoon, visit
the nearby Berardo Museum with its collection
of modern and contemporary art. Proceed
to the Monument of the Navigators, which
celebrates the Portuguese age of exploration
during the 15th and 16th centuries, and Belem
Tower, once part of the city’s defence system
and another example of Manueline style. (B)
Morning tour of the Gulbenkian Museum,
which exhibits an outstanding collection of
fine and decorative arts. After a farewell lunch, visit the National Tile Museum to see the
decorative azulejo tiles housed in a 16th-century
monastery, before returning to London. (B, L)
