The lights occur when highly charged particles from the sun hit gas atoms in the Earth's atmosphere, around the magnetic pole, causing these gas atoms to become energised and shine. Located close to the Norwegian border, the park measures 77 sq km and is situated along the shores of Lake Tornetrask. The area is regarded as one of the best locations in the world from which to observe the northern lights due to its location in the heart of the auroral zone. The park benefits from clear and virtually cloud-free skies ideal for lights viewing. Seeing the northern lights is not guaranteed as it is a natural phenomena and weather dependent, however, in Abisko you will have the best possible chance.
Activities are guided but not on a private basis. All cold weather equipment is supplied for excursions, however, you will need dress accordingly for the extreme cold of the region.
