Fly to Santander and transfer to the Silken Rio Santander for 1 night. (N)
Transfer to the train station and board the El Transcantabrico Clasico for the 4-night journey to Santiago de Compostela. Late morning and afternoon visits to the town of Santillana del Mar with its beautifully preserved medieval centre. Continue to the Cave of Altamira, containing some of the fi nest examples of Upper Palaeolithic cave art, and the village of Ribadesella. (B, L, D)
Today drive into the mountainous Picos de Europa National Park in the heart of the region of Asturias. Visit Lake Enol and then continue to the shrine of Covadonga. After lunch, visit the region’s capital, Oviedo, with its Asturian Romanesque art. Highlights include the Basilica of San Julian de los Prados. (B, L, D)
Morning visits to Avilés, an ancient city with an excellent old town quarter, and Gijón, a city that opens up to the Cantabrian Sea and is alive with cultural events. After visiting both towns, return to the El Transcantabrico and continue to Luarca, known as ‘the White Town of the Green Coast’. (B, L, D)
Morning visits to Las Catedrales beach and the picturesque town of Ribadeo. Continue by train to Viveiro to visit the old quarter of the city. (B, L, D)

The oldest train in Spain, El Transcantabrico features original 1920s Pullman carriages that have been renovated to offer modernday luxuries combined with all the charm of the golden era of rail travel. All guest cabins feature double beds equipped with a minibar and safe and all have air conditioning and en suite facilities. The dining car offers an à la carte menu while the bar car has panoramic windows where you can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif as you watch the scenery pass by. Other carriages include a Panoramic Coach, Tea Saloon and Entertainment Saloon and there is also a small library with newspapers and magazines.

The Silken Rio Santander is situated next to the renowned Sardinero beach, with excellent views of the Cantabrian Sea. This modern property offers comfortable rooms; Superior room categories have a balcony and sea views.
