centre of cuisine, renowned for pintxos
(Basque tapas) and txakoli wine.
Fly from London (regional connections available)
to Bilbao with British Airways and transfer to the
hotel. After lunch, take an afternoon walking
tour of Bilbao to see the city’s combination of
industrial and post-modernist architecture that
contrasts with the medieval alleys and lanes of
the Casco Viejo (old town). Evening welcome
meal of pintxos (Basque tapas). Stay 3 nights at

This morning walk to the Museum of Fine Arts,
with its comprehensive collection of Basque,
Spanish and European art from the middle
ages to the 20th century. Afternoon tour of
the Guggenheim Museum. This spectacular
post-modern building designed by Frank Gehry
contains permanent and visiting exhibits of
modern and contemporary works by Spanish
and international artists. (B)
Travel to the charming seaside city of San
Sebastian to explore the lively old town, belle
époque buildings and renowned gastronomy.
Visit Museo San Telmo, home to an art collection
including works by El Greco, Rubens, Alonso Cano
and Ribera, as well as exhibitions on Basque
culture, folk traditions and mythology. Return to
Bilbao via Guernica to see the ceramic replica of
Picasso's great work. Farewell dinner. (B, D)

Afternoon at leisure. Transfer to the airport for a

Thomas Abbott, a
in architectural history
from the baroque to the
20th century, graduated
in psychology and art
history at Carleton College,
Minnesota, completed his graduate studies
in the history of art and architecture at the
Technical University of Berlin, and has also
studied at the Louvre School of Art History
in Paris. He has conducted many acclaimed
cultural and art tours throughout Europe.
Dr Anne Anderson is an
art historian, archaeologist
and research fellow at
the University of Exeter,
a lecturer with Nadfas, a
broadcaster and writer.
Her specialisms include the
aesthetic movement, arts and crafts, art
nouveau, art deco and modernism. She has
curated two national exhibitions.
