Morning drive to Curtea de Arges, the former capital of Wallachia, to view the Episcopal Church, the burial site of many Romanian kings. Continue to Horezu and visit Hurezi monastery. Renowned for its pottery and listed as a Unesco world heritage site, spare time will be given to visit one of the many ceramic shops in the city. Stay 1 night at Conacul Lui Maldar. (B. D)
Morning drive on the highest road in Romania and one of the most picturesque, the Transalpina. Continue to the town of Sibiu for a visit to the Bruckenthal Art Gallery and a walking tour of this medieval town to view the main square, Liar's bridge and the Evangelical Church. Morning visit to Fagaras, a fortified village from the middle ages. Continue to Bran to visit Dracula's castle and then to Brasov. Here you will see one of the finest baroque squares in the country, Pia?a Sfatului, as well as the Black Church, which is the largest Gothic Church between Vienna and Istanbul and houses a collection of more than 300 Ottoman rugs. Morning drive to Sighisoara, via Viscri, to visit Viscri's fortified church. The village of Viscri is famous for the property here owned by the Prince of Wales, which help protect the unique way of life that has existed here for hundreds of years through the promotion of sustainable tourism. Continue to visit Sighisoara, a beautifully preserved medieval settlement and a Unesco world heritage site. The city walls encircle cobbled streets lined with colourful 16th-century burgher houses. Visits include the citadel, the Church on the Hill and the Clock Tower. Stay overnight at the Fronius Residence. (B, D)
Morning drive to Târgu Mures to visit the Cultural Palace, a flamboyant, early 20th-century city hall with an outstanding stained glass hall, and the old fortress. Continue to Cluj-Napoca, which was formally a Dacian settlement. Stay 1 night at the Hotel Hampton by Hilton or similar. (B)
