Often seen as the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, the island of Malta has a wealth of historical and cultural sites, which have attracted visitors over the centuries. This six-day tour visits the capital, Valletta, and its three surrounding cities, and then travels into the Maltese countryside to explore the towns of Mosta, Mdina and Rabat.
Morning flight from London Heathrow to Malta with Air Malta. Transfer to the Palace Hotel for 5 nights. (B)
Today will be spent in Valletta and the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea. In Valletta,
visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Palace of the Grand Masters (tapestry chamber only), Casa Rocca Piccola and St John’s Cathedral, containing two masterpieces by Caravaggio. During the visit to Vittoriosa, where the Knights of St John first settled, take in the Collachio, the Inquisitor’s Palace and St Laurence Church. Explore Cospicua, the largest of the Three Cities, with its series of fortifications, and Senglea,which suffered heavy damage duringthe second world war. See the Gardjola Tower overlooking the harbour. (B)
Morning excursion to see the megalithic temples of Tarxien and Hagar Qim. Built between 3600 and 2500BC, these are the oldest freestanding stone structures in the world. Afternoon at leisure or optional visit to the Hypogeum, the only prehistoric underground temple in the world. All sites visited are on the Unesco world
heritage list. (B)
Morning tour of Mdina.Known as the silent city, Mdina is a medieval walled citadel with magnificent views over the island. The tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St Paul and the cathedral museum. Continue to Rabat, visiting St Paul’s catacombs and underground city. Afternoon at leisure. (B)
Full day at leisure to relax or further explore the island. (B)
Late morning transfer to the airport and fly to London Heathrow with Air Malta. (B)
