Malta is the largest island of the Maltese
archipelago and offers over 7,000 years
of intriguing history. Isolated in the
middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the
islands have been of strategic interest
to a succession of rulers, resulting in
various periods of occupation. This is
reflected in the multicultural cuisine and
Maltese language, which shows Arabic,
Italian, French and English influences.
The islands are dotted with magnificent
walled cities and fortifications, as well as
megalithic temples at Tarxien and Hagar
Qim. Coupled with this incredible wealth
of history are the islands’ expansive
beaches, lapped by the warm waters of

Today will be spent in Valletta and the Three
Cities of Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea.
In Valletta, visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens,
the Palace of the Grand Masters (tapestry
chamber only), Casa Rocca Piccola and St
John’s Cathedral, containing two masterpieces
by Caravaggio. During the visit to Vittoriosa,
where the Knights of St John first settled, take
in the Collachio (where the Knights lived), the
Inquisitor’s Palace and St Laurence Church.
Explore Cospicua, the largest of the Three
Cities, with its series of fortifications, and
Senglea, which suffered heavy damage during
the second world war. See the Gardjola Tower
overlooking the harbour. (B)
Morning tour of Mdina. Known as the silent
city, Mdina is a medieval walled citadel with
magnificent views over the island. The tour
includes a visit to the Cathedral of St Paul and
the cathedral museum. Continue to Rabat,
visiting St Paul’s Catacombs and underground city. Afternoon at leisure or optional tour to the
Blue Grotto. This evening there will be a farewell
