varied historic and artistic legacy with
expert Dr Konstantine Politis. Malta has
preserved all traces of its extraordinary
past, from Neolithic temples dating back
5,000 years to the elegant city of Valetta,
created by the valour of the Knights of
St John, and outstanding artworks by
Caravaggio. The island’s archaeology,
architecture and art are set against a
backdrop of beautiful landscapes.
Fly from London (regional connections
available) to Malta with Air Malta. Transfer
to the hotel for an introductory lecture and
welcome dinner. Stay at the Victoria Hotel in

Spend the day exploring Valletta, first visiting
the new parliament, inaugurated in 2015,
followed by a stroll in the Upper Barrakka
gardens, which offer panoramic views over
the Grand Harbour. After tasting Kinnie, a
Maltese soft drink, continue to St John’s
Co-Cathedral, home of the Knights of Malta
and one of the finest examples of high
baroque architecture in Europe. The cathedral
houses two masterpieces by Caravaggio.
In the afternoon, see the 18th-century
Manoel Theatre and Casa Rocca Piccola,
which is still the home of the noble de Piro
family. There will be a tour with one of the

Lines fortifications and the Red Tower en route
to the ferry terminal. Cross to Gozo and visit
the Azure Window, a natural limestone arch,
followed by the citadel in Victoria and a cheese
making demonstration. In the afternoon see
the Neolithic Ggantija temple and Kenuna
semaphore tower, which has fantastic views
over Gozo, before taking the ferry back to
Morning visit to the Rotunda of Mosta, known
for its large unsupported dome, followed by a
guided tour at Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar. Continue
to Attard for a private tour of the baroque Villa
Bologna and its gardens with a member of the
owner’s family. This evening there will be a farewell
dinner at Palazz L-Ahmar, a former hunting lodge

Travel across the island to see the megalithic
temple complex of Hagar Qim, followed by St
Paul’s Church, grotto and catacombs in Rabat.
Try pastizzi, traditional Maltese savoury pastries,
and spend the afternoon in Mdina, the ancient
walled capital, to see the medieval town and the
Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul. The day will
end with a private visit at the Carmelite Priory,
where you will be shown around by one of the
monks who still live there. Transfer to the airport

is a Greek archaeologist
and well-published scholar
specialising in the early
early Islamic periods.
Educated in Greece, the
United States, Belgium and Britain, he has
worked extensively for the British Museum,
the antiquities ministries of Jordan, Syria and
Oman, and recently at Athens University.
