Formerly a maritime superpower with a population of more than 70,000, Amalfi suffered a devasting earthquake in 1343 which resulted in much of the town being lost to the sea. Today Amalfi is a small seaside town set around a small cove with just over 5,000 inhabitants, famous for its fine beach,
restaurants, cafes and shops.
