the producer of the best Italian cuisine,
from prosciutto, parmesan cheese and
balsamic vinegar to other specialities such
as tortellini and lasagne. Bologna is home
to the oldest university in the western
world while Ravenna was once the capital
of the western Roman empire. There are
many beautiful cities including Modena,
Parma and Ferrara, as well as ancient
Etruscan sites and monuments scattered
throughout the region.

Afternoon walking tour of Parma, including the
Palazzo della Pilotta and Teatro Farnese, before
visiting the octagonal pink-marble baptistery in
Piazza Duomo. (N)
Visit the historic town of Cremona,
recognised by Unesco for its traditional violin
craftsmanship. Visit a lute workshop and listen
to a short recital. After some time at leisure for
lunch, continue to the Casa Barezzi museum
in Busseto, once the home of the celebrated
opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi. The museum
provides an intriguing insight into Verdi’s life.
After the museum, enjoy a cold-cuts tasting
session in a historic butcher's shop. (B)
Full-day tour of Soragna. Visit the Rocca Meli
Lupi fortress. Built in 1385, it has a square floor
plan, with four towers at the corners and a fifth
in the centre of the main south-facing facade.
The original unaltered furniture and furnishings
still remain inside as a fine example of early
baroque style. Lunch is at leisure. This afternoon
visit the Parmigiano-Reggiano museum where
you will learn about the production and history
of Parmesan cheese. (B)
Today you will be taken on a hill tour between
Parma and Reggio Emilia, where you will stop at Torrechiara castle, one of the best-preserved
fortresses in the region and a fine example
of 15th-century architecture. Continue to
the Villa Magnani-Rocca, a private residence
that became an art museum, with work
ranging from the 13th century to the
20th century. At the end of your tour you
will visit a prosciutto manufacturer where
you will have a light lunch. Afternoon at

Morning city tour of Reggio Emilia. Visit
the cathedral and the majestic municipal
theatre. Lunch and afternoon at leisure before
continuing to Bologna to stay at the Hotel
Cavour (or similar) for 3 nights (B)

covered walkways, medieval palaces and
the oldest university in Europe. The tour
includes a visit to the cathedral, the ancient
market area and the fascinating anatomical
theatre. There will also be a mortadella

its Renaissance palaces, cathedral and former

Galla Placidia, an ancient Roman building
containing exceptionally well-preserved mosaics;
the mosaics of the Byzantine church of

Theodoric, an ancient monument just outside
