Morning visit to the medieval village of Erice with its tiny winding lanes. Continue to the ‘Strada del Sale’, or the Salt Way Road, a complex of brackish wetlands, islets and saltpans. Morning drive to Agrigento to visit one of Europe’s best archaeological sites, the Valley of the Temples. View the temples of Juno, Concordia and Heracles as well as the ruins of the Temple of Zeus. Continue to Piazza Armerina to see the Villa Romana del Casale, which houses one of the largest and fi nest collection of mosaics ever found in a Roman villa. Continue to Taormina and stay for 3 nights at the Hotel Caparena. Located on the coast, it has a private beach and landscaped gardens. (B, D)
Full day at leisure to explore this picturesque coastal town or optional 4x4 tour to Mount Etna to view the Sartorius craters, the Alcantara Gorge and Valley del Bove. (B)

The elegant Grand Hotel et Des Palmes, founded in 1874, has one of the most attractive foyers found in Sicily, following a number of alterations made in 1907 by one of Italy's foremost art nouveau architect, Enrico Ragusa. The hotel exudes old-world glamour and has welcomed a number of illustrious visitors. Prime Minister Francesco Crispi gave political lectures here in 1881 and Richard Wagner finished his opera, Parsifal, here. Indeed, the armchair he sat in is still there.
