Minoans, who established one of Europe’s
earliest civilisations. As a strategic
gateway to the eastern Mediterranean,
the island has been ruled by all the main

Morning drive to Agios Nikolaos, stopping en
route to visit the ancient Minoan Palace of
Knossos, the centre of Europe’s first civilisation.
According to myth, it was home to King Minos
and site of the legend of Theseus slaying the
Minotaur in the labyrinth. Its history dates back
more than 4,000 years. Afternoon visit to the
Archaeological Museum, which contains an
excellent collection of Minoan artefacts. Continue
to Crete’s capital, Heraklion. View the Venetian
harbour, Lions Square and city walls. Stay 4
nights at the Miramare hotel or similar. (B, D)
Morning walking tour of Spinalonga island.
Formerly a leper colony, the legacies of Greek,
Ottoman, Byzantine and Venetian occupation
over the centuries have left their imprint on this fortified island. Return to Agios Nikolaos via the
Kera Byzantine church in Kritsa. Afternoon at

Morning visit to Kardiotissa monastery at Kira
to view its frescoes. Continue to the mountain
plateau of the Lassithi plain with its picturesque
views of the surrounding countryside and the
Bay of Malia. Visit the Dikte cave, reputed to be
the birthplace of Zeus, king of the Greek gods.

Full day at leisure or optional tour visiting Sitia,
Vai and Toplou. Sitia is called the ‘Gate to the
East’ and excavations have dated the earliest
settlement here to pre-Minoan times. Vai has
Europe’s only wild-date palm grove and an
excellent white sand beach. Toplou is home to
Crete’s most significant monastery. Founded in
the 14th century, it is a fortress-like structure,
built to protect the resident monks from
