Finnish Lapland begins roughly along the Arctic Circle and expands north. Known as the 'Wild North', the area is the last refuge of Finland's Sámi people, who have traditionally subsisted on reindeer herding. This vast expanse of arctic tundra has no craggy mountains or fjords, but is covered by an endless sea of pine forests and rounded fells (tunturi) that break up the forested landscape. In an area of stunning beauty, this short 4-day Private Journey visits Saariselka, gateway to the most expansive fell highland region in Europe and one of the world's most northerly winter resorts. You will stay at the iconic Hotel Kakslauttanen where you have the opportunity to stay in both snow and glass igloos, the latter affording opportunities to glimpse the northern lights through the glass roof in comfort and warmth.
Morning flight from London to Ivalo via Helsinki with Finnair. You will be met and transferred from the airport to your hotel in Saariselka. Stay 3 nights at the Hotel Kakslauttanen with tonight in a snow igloo. (D)
This morning, depart on a husky safari into the wilderness around Saariselka. Rest of the day at leisure. Tonight stay in a glass igloo. (B, D)
After breakfast, depart on a reindeer sleigh safari and experience one of the oldest forms of winter transport. Rest of the day at leisure. This evening, go in search of the northern lights on a guided excursion by snow mobile. Stay in a glass igloo. (B, D)
