Separated by the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki and St Petersburg share much in common. Helsinki was under imperial Russian control for over a century and the legacy of this era can be clearly seen in the neo-classical architecture still prevalent in the city. St Petersburg, the city founded by Peter the Great, has imperial palaces and, of course, the celebrated Hermitage museum. Spend three nights in each city and travel by the high-speed rail connection between them.
