Fly from London (regional connections available) to Helsinki with British Airways. Transfer to the Sokos Hotel Vaakuna (or similar) for 1 night. (N)
Morning train to Rovaniemi (12 hours). On arrival, transfer to Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus (or similar) for 1 night. (B)
Morning visit to Santa’s village. Continue to visit the Sodankylä church, one of the oldest in Lapland. Afternoon drive north to Inari and stay overnight at the Kultahovi Hotel (or similar). (B, D)
Morning visit to SIIDA, the National Museum of the Finnish Sami. Continue into Norway, to the northernmost point of Europe, Honningsvag, stopping en route in Karasjok. Honningsvag is the nearest point to the North Cape and only 2,000 kilometres from thegeographical North Pole. In the evening, travel to the North Cape for an unforgettable view of the midnight sun. This morning, board the Hurtigruten vessel (Polar outside cabin) for a 5-night cruise. As the ship starts its voyage south, view the surrounding Arctic landscape on deck or from the panorama lounge. In the afternoon, the ship docks at Vardo, Norway’s easternmost port. Heading south, cruise along the Varanger peninsula to Batsfjord, before reaching Berlevag in the evening. (B, L, D)
Morning stop in Hammerfest. Founded in 1789, over time this town became Norway’s polar capital, serving as a base for hunting expeditions into the high Arctic. Continue to Tromso with an opportunity to walk around this picturesque town. (B, L, D)
Arrive at Harstad this morning, and admire views of the old church. Continue towards the Risoyrenna, a shallow 7-metre-deep channel made especially for the Hurtigruten in the 1920s to provide an ‘inside route’ between Harstad and Sortland. Arrive in Stamsund and see the majestic peaks of the huge Lofoten wall. (B, L, D)
Crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N is an important ‘rite of passage’. Celebrate the event out on deck with an Arctic tradition – a spoonful of cod liver oil. Sail along the Helgeland coast, passing hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls rich in local lore. Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. (B, L, D)
The ship heads out into the majestic Trondheimsfjord, 170 km long and up to 25 km wide. Fishing is hugely important to Norwegian coastal communities. Kristiansund’s location has steadily provided the town with a wealth of opportunities in the fishing, shipbuilding and oil industries. Kristiansund is today regarded as Norway’s ‘dried cod capital’ because of its export of the salted dry fish. Continue to Alesund. (B, L, D)
Morning sailing to Bergen via the picturesque Nordfjord and Sognefjord. Enjoy superb views of this magnificent island-studded coastline en route before finally disembarking in Bergen. Afternoon tour of Bergen including visits to the fish markets and the old Hanseatic wharf
