In the morning, visit the Poas volcano to see its rising steam and bubbling turquoise crater lake. Afternoon at leisure. (B)
Shared overland transfer to Caño Blanco on the Caribbean coast. Cruise through the canals and backwaters that lead to Tortuguero and stay for 2 nights at Pachira Lodge. (B, L, D)
Full day of shared excursions in Tortuguero exploring the tropical forests and waterways. Look for monkeys, sloths and all kinds of other wildlife including tiny red frogs. From July to September, an option is available to observe green turtles nesting on the beach. (B, L, D)
Fly back to San Jose and continue by road to the Bajos del Toro area. Stay 3 nights at El Silencio, a luxury eco-retreat surrounded by tropical cloud forest and waterfalls. (Two-bedroom villa). (B)
