Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, has a 19th-century fort, a cluster of colonial-era buildings, and a number of fascinating museums. It is also a great base from which to explore the greater Ashanti region.
The Akwasidae festival is celebrated by the Ashanti people to commemorate their ancestors. The Ashanti have their own traditional calendar and the Akwasidae is celebrated on the first day of every month. On this day the King of Ashanti meets his subjects in the courtyard of the Royal Palace. There is a colourful parade including drum beaters, folk dancers, horn-blowers and singers. During the ceremony, the courtiers give gifts and the griots (storytellers) recount tales of past Ashanti royalty.
