The South Luangwa valley is vast,
remote and home to a truly impressive
variety of flora and fauna. The three
intimate camps on this safari lie next
to the magnificent Luangwa river
with its large meanders and countless
tributaries. The water acts as a magnet
for animal and birdlife, especially during
the dry season. The contrasting camps
offer 4x4 safari drives, including very
productive night drives and some of the
best walking Africa has to offer. Wildlife
viewing from the mess tents is also
common as the animal life is so prolific.

Nkwali Camp is built on Robin Pope Safari's private land on the banks of the Luangwa River, overlooking the National Park. This is superb game country with a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grass plains. A small camp of thatched chalets with en-suite facilities, there is also a wonderful bar, built around an enormous ebony tree, and a dining room overlooking a lagoon where many of the resident animals drink during the day. Unusually in this area, the camp also has a small swimming...
On a sweeping bend of the river, 12 kilometres north of Tena Tena, lies Nsefu. Nsefu was the first photographic safari camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties. The Nsefu Sector was recognised then as a phenomenal area and it still is. Robin Pope reopened the camp in 1999, in keeping with the original style, and so operates the only two camps in the Nsefu Sector of the park. The view of the river is superb and game can often be seen close to the camp. The bar, tucked in beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game. The original rondavels have been extended, with a spacious open-air bathroom added. Each room has a clear view of the river, through large open windows and from the new wooden veranda. The camp lies in the heart of the undeveloped Nsefu sector and so offers charm and total comfort in remoteness and...
The first camp that Robin Pope built is located within the South Luangwa Valley National Park, in a secluded area under a grove of shady mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa river. The large custom-made tents each have an attached open air bathroom with a flush toilet and shower as well as a private veranda. The thatched dining room and bar stand on a wide bend of the river; meals are of a very high standard and are served overlooking this wonderful view. With three distinct habitats, the river, the adjoining lagoons and the plains, there is a wide diversity of game. Amongst the species, waterbuck, zebra, warthog and greater kudu are often seen. The wandering herds of elephant are among some of the largest left in Africa. Buffalo continuously move in search of fresh pastures and water and in their wake come the predators, the lion and hyena. Leopard hunt the smaller game under...
