This is the quintessential African safari
experience that combines the untamed
wilderness of the iconic Okavango
delta with comfortable mobile tented
accommodation. The Letaka expeditions
are privately guided throughout and
a safari chef and camp assistants also
accompany the group. Both campsites
are private and the en suite tents are
very spacious. All meals and drinks are
included whilst staying in the Letaka
Fly from London (regional connections
available) to Maun via Johannesburg with
British Airways. (N)
Arrive in Maun. Fly by light aircraft to the
Xakanaxa airstrip in the Moremi Game Reserve*.
From the air only the larger animals can be seen.
These include large breeding herds of African
elephants that live in the mopane scrub. On
the open plains large herds of buffaloes and
lechwe can be seen and, in the waterways, rafts
of hippos are a common sight. Once you are
in Xakanaxa the smaller wildlife can be found
alongside a huge variety of birds. Meet your
guide, who will drive you to a secluded campsite
in the Xakanaxa region. Stay 3 nights in a Letaka
Tented Camp. Afternoon wildlife drive. (B, L, D)
Wildlife drives in the Moremi Game Reserve.
Habitats here range from wide-open flood
plains, marshes, lagoons and papyrus-fringed
channels to woodland and savanna. As a result
of this extremely variable habitat the diversity
of both wildlife and birdlife is excellent. Moremi
is among the best wildlife reserves in Africa
for viewing endangered African wild dogs.
Xakanaxa is home to a resident herd of several
hundred buffaloes whose range covers the
territories of at least four prides of lions, which
may often be seen flanking the herd. Breeding
herds of elephants and red lechwe are also
common sights. (B, L, D)
Following an early morning breakfast, take
a slow drive north-east towards the Khwai
Concession Area, passing the magnificent
Dombo hippo pools. Leopards, cheetahs, servals and lions are common predators along this
route and general wildlife includes southern
giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, tsessebe, red lechwe,
roan and sable antelope. The eastern reaches
of Khwai are home to some impressive old
bull elephants that revel in the cool waters
of the Khwai and are far more approachable
while drinking and bathing than the breeding
herds. Stay 3 nights in Letaka Tented Camp
in an exclusive campsite in the community
area. Afternoon wildlife drive and night drive.
Exploring after dark with spotlights offers
the chance to spot nocturnal animals rarely
encountered during the day. (B, L, D)
Explore the area on foot, in 4x4 vehicle and
by mokoro. Elephants, lions, leopards, servals
and African wildcats are the common
predators of the region. The swampy areas
are home to red lechwe. Other general wildlife
includes blue wildebeest, giraffes, kudus and
impalas. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, take a wildlife drive to the
airstrip. Fly by light aircraft to Maun*. Board an
international flight to London, via Johannesburg,
on British Airways. (B)

Victoria Falls is the most popular extension to
this mobile camping safari. The Victoria Falls

colonial atmosphere and close proximity to the
falls, is a good choice. Also in Zimbabwe is The
Elephant Camp, an excellent location if you
are interested in a range of activities including
short interactions with the Wild Horizon
elephants and with Sylvester, the cheetah, who
was abandoned and hand-raised; lunch at the
Batoka Gorge Lookout Café; village tours; or
birding and nature walks on the concession.
Other recommended extensions are the Central
Kalahari Game Reserve, the Makgadikgadi Pans
and the beaches of Mozambique or Mauritius.
