This is the quintessential African safari
experience that combines the untamed

Arrive in Maun. Fly by light aircraft to the
Xakanaxa airstrip in the Moremi Game Reserve*.
From the air only the larger animals are seen
easily. These include large breeding herds of
African elephant that live in the mopane scrub.
On the open plains large herds of buffalo and
lechwe can be seen and, in the waterways, rafts
of hippo are a common sight. Once you are
in Xakanaxa the smaller wildlife can be found
alongside a huge variety of birds. Meet your
guide, who will drive you to a secluded campsite
in the Xakanaxa region. Stay 3 nights in a
Letaka Tented Camp. Afternoon wildlife drive.

Wildlife drives in the Moremi Game Reserve.
Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains,
marshes, lagoons and papyrus-fringed channels
to woodland and savanna. As a result of this
extremely variable habitat the diversity of
both wildlife and birdlife is excellent. Moremi
is among the best wildlife reserves in Africa
for viewing endangered African wild dogs.
Xakanaxa is home to a resident herd of several
hundred buffalo whose range covers the
territories of at least four prides of lions, which
may often be seen flanking the herd. Breeding
herds of elephant and red lechwe are also
common sights. (B, L, D)
Following an early morning breakfast, take
a slow drive north-east towards the Khwai
Concession Area, passing the magnificent
Dombo Hippo Pools. Leopards, cheetah, servals
and lions are common predators along this route
and general wildlife includes southern giraffes,
Burchell’s zebras, tsessebe, red lechwe, roan and
sable antelope. The eastern reaches of Khwai
are home to some impressive old bull elephants
who revel in the cool waters of the Khwai and
are far more approachable while drinking and
bathing than the breeding herds. Stay 3 nights
in Letaka Tented Camp in an exclusive
campsite in the community area. Afternoon
wildlife drive and night drive. Exploring after
dark with spotlights offers the chance to spot
nocturnal animals rarely encountered during the
day. (B, L, D)
Explore the area on foot, in 4x4 vehicle and
by mokoro. Elephants, lions, leopards, servals
and African wildcats are the common
predators of the region. The swampy areas
are home to red lechwe. Other general wildlife
includes blue wildebeest, giraffes, kudus and
impalas. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, take a wildlife drive to the
airstrip. Fly by light aircraft to Maun*. Board an
