Zambia Tailor-Made Holidays

Country Overview

Victoria falls, Zambia

Overview
Zambia is the ultimate safari destination, away from the tourist crowds. Its main national parks are the North and South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue. The magnificent Victoria Falls can also be viewed from Zambia and make an excellent addition to a few days on safari. There is quite a distance between the parks and the roads are in poor condition we therefore suggest that you fly from camp to camp. Zambia’s wildlife is outstanding and accommodation is predominantly in small, intimate lodges. Walking safaris were pioneered in Zambia, although 4 x 4 game drives are also on offer at most of the camps and lodges. Night game drives provide a great opportunity to spot nocturnal species such as bush baby, civet and genet.

What to see

Livingstone
Named after the famous Victorian missionary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, the town was established in 1905 and made the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911. The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935 and the bustling city has become a quiet town once again. The proximity to the Zambezi River and the spectacular Victoria Falls has led it to becoming a base for travellers from all over the globe wanting to explore this Seventh wonder of the World.

South Luangwa National Park
The South Luangwa Valley, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The oxbow lagoons of the Luangwa River, woodland and plains of the valley attract a high concentration of game particularly hippo, elephant, buffalo, puku and crocodile. There are also regular predator sightings including lion, leopard and wild dog and the park is home to over 400 species of birds.

When to go
The most popular time to visit Zambia is during the short dry period, between April and September, when the game congregates near the waterholes. The ‘Green Season’ runs from December to April. It is not only a quiet time of year for the lodges, but travel is relatively inexpensive. During this time, the rivers in the Luangwa Valley swell, dry plains become lakes, and vegetation grows lush and green. Animals give birth and food is plentiful. Many of the resident birds form spectacular breeding colonies and many migrant birds arrive from the north. During the wet season (October and November) game viewing is restricted to the less remote camps.

Great Experiences

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls
Known locally as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, meaning ‘The smoke that Thunders’, Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. A number of excursions are available at the Falls including helicopter and micro light flights for stunning aerial views, picnic excursions on Lady Livingstone Island and Zambezi River cruises.

Walking Safari

Walking Safari
For a true wilderness experience there is nothing quite like a walking safari. Leaving behind the distracting sounds of a vehicle, as you walk your senses quickly become attuned to your surroundings, making walking in the open near to big game highly exciting. On a walking safari you also get to appreciate the smaller things that you would easily miss in a vehicle.

Bird Watching

Bird Watching
For birders, Zambia’s endless miombo woodlands, vast wetlands, sweeping grasslands, equatorial forests and montane wilderness areas are home to at least 750 species of bird, many of which are difficult to see anywhere else. Lodges we would recommend specifically for bird watching include Tafika Camp, Mchenja Bushcamp, Chongwe River Camp, Busanga Bush Camp to name a few.

Canoe Safari

Canoe Safari
Travel by canoe through the floodplains of Zambezi to the confluence of the Luangwa River. On a canoe safari explore numerous subsidiary channels of the Zambezi, where high concentrations of game and bird life co-exist.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track
Head for the wilderness of Northern Zambia to discover hidden waterfalls and serene lakes, with hardly another person in sight.
