Country Overview

Plains zebra and flamingo, Ngorongoro

Overview
Tanzania is known for its abundant wildlife and the annual wildebeest migration, one of the world’s most famous natural spectacles during which, every year, an estimated 2 million wildebeest, zebra and other wildlife move en masse through the Serengeti in search of green pastures. There are three main safari circuits to explore in Tanzania: the north, the south and the west.

What to see

The Northern Circuit
The northern circuit is Tanzania’s most visited region and encompasses Lake Manyara, Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Fly by light aircraft or travel by road, accompanied by your own driver/safari guide. The elephants of Tarangire, the tree climbing lion of Lake Manyara, the endless Serengeti plains and the huge concentrations of animals in the Ngorongoro Crater promise a memorable safari experience.

The Southern Circuit
The southern circuit is an untamed wilderness area, visited by fewer people than the north. Included on the southern circuit are Selous Game Reserve, Africa’s largest wildlife reserve, and Ruaha National Park. These parks offer superb wildlife viewing in 4 x 4 safaris vehicles, on foot or by boat. The wetland scenery teems with hippo, crocodile and over 440 bird species. A week on safari in the Selous is easily combined with a beach stay on either Zanzibar or Pemba.

When to go
There are two distinct rainy seasons: from the end of March to early June, and from the end of October to mid-December. Rain is normally in short, sharp downpours with clear skies between. From January to March it is hot and dry. June to October is warm and dry, with colder evenings. Game viewing is good throughout the year, although the migration leaves the Serengeti for the Masai Mara at the end of March / beginning of April, arriving in Kenya in late June / early July. The return migration leaves Kenya in October and arrives in the Serengeti in December, depending on the year’s rainfall.

Great Experiences

Serengeti migration

See ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’
Every year, an estimated 2 million wildebeest, zebra and other wildlife move en masse through the Serengeti in search of green pastures. Migration patterns are dependent on the rain but as a general guide from December to March the animals congregate around Ndutu, in the far south, from April to May they move into central Serengeti and between June and July the migration splits in two groups one going west and the other going directly to the north. From August to October the herd reforms to graze along the banks of the Mara River before returning south from the beginning of November.

Selous Game Reserve

Off the beaten track
For sheer drama, the relatively unknown Selous Game Reserve is hard to beat. Nearly four times the size of the Serengeti, it is the second largest protected wilderness area in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It supports an amazing diversity of birdlife and is home to Africa’s largest populations of buffalo and wild dog. Once there, the best way to explore this unspoilt piece of Tanzanian wilderness is by boat, through river channels and swamps.

The time span of the objects recovered from the gorge date from 2,100,000–15,000 years ago, making this a region of great historical importance.
