The Featherbed Nature Reserve, a unique 150 hectare private Nature Reserve, encompasses the whole of the Western Head of Knysna and is one of South Africa's Natural Heritage Sites. It is home to two of the Garden Route's icons, namely the Knysna loerie and the blue duiker, one of Africa's smallest antelope species. Other wildlife found on the Reserve include Cape mountain tortoises, blue cranes (South Africa's national bird), rare black African oyster catchers (listed in the endangered red data list), white breasted cormorant, bushbuck and more.

This one hour tour starts from the interactive visitors' centre at Knysna Elephant Park. Here you will be welcomed by well-trained and informative guides, and after viewing a short video presentation you will be driven through the fields to the elephants. You will have an opportunity to touch, feed and photograph the elephants.

The tour begins with a scenic drive to the top of Knysna Heads, dramatic cliffs which overlook the Indian Ocean on one side and the town and lagoon of Knysna towards the distant Outeniqua Mountains on the other. You will then take a shared 25-minute ferry ride across Knysna's magnificent estuary to a secluded nature reserve, home to a variety of wildlife, Knysna loerie, the blue crane, and one of Africa's smallest antelope, the blue duiker. On arrival, a 4x4 trailer will take you to the summit of the Western Headland for a spectacular panorama view of the Knysna Basin and the sea. After admiring the view, take a gentle walk through a Milkwood forest, into caves and along the coastline back to a restaurant, where you will be served lunch in the Food Forest, an outside eating area set amongst the Milkwood trees. Continue to the Elephant Sanctuary, which provides a safe haven for six elephants and a platform for education and interaction. Join an hour-long trunk in hand experience, which involves walking with the elephants through the forest to learn about these amazing animals from their habits to their anatomy. This experience will be shared with others.

You will be collected at your hotel and driven over the Outeniqua Mountain Pass to the red semi-desert of the Little Karoo. After a short tour of the town, continue to Cango Caves where you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. Visit Cango Wildlife Ranch, a breeding facility for endangered species. It is also the oldest and biggest cheetah contact centre worldwide offering visitors a rare opportunity of interacting with hand reared cheetahs and getting actively involved in saving this species and others from extinction. From here continue to the Safari Ostrich Farm to see one of the world's most peculiar birds. After a tour of the farm and a traditional ostrich lunch (at your own expense), you will be transferred back to your hotel.

This morning depart from the charming coastal village of Plettenberg Bay, with your private guide, to Nature's Valley, a haven of tranquility and beauty. On the way to the Tsitsikamma, visit the Bungi Jump Bridge, which is the highest in the world at 216m and continue up mountain passes and along river gorges, passing the massive Outeniqua Yellowwood tree (which is nearly a thousand years old) and Storms River Bridge to the Tsitsikamma Coastal Nature Reserve. Lunch (at your own expense) will be at the Storms River Mouth, where the river meets the sea amidst spectacular cliffs. Spend some time at leisure exploring the nature reserve to see temperate high forests and Cape Fynbos, a protected reef and various wildlife species. You may also see dolphins as they play in the waves below, and the Southern Right Whale, which come inshore to breed (August to October only). En route back to Plettenberg Bay, visit Monkeyland where an experienced game ranger will show you many species of primates as well as a large variety of forest dwelling birds. Return to your hotel late this afternoon.
