TROPICAL BEACHES & TURQUOISE WATERS
The Bazaruto archipelago, in the south of the country, is a string of five sandy islands lying close to the mainland, just north of Vilanculos. This unspoilt marine reserve contains some of the best snorkelling and deep-sea fishing sites in the world, and many of the lodges offer island walks or drives, dhow cruises and picnics to secluded, untouched beaches. The Quirimbas archipelago in the north comprises 32 small, pristine coral islands that are visited by relatively few tourists. This is barefoot luxury at its best, and the colourful marine life here is some of the most spectacular in the world. A stay here can be easily combined with a Tanzanian safari.
CULTURE & ADVENTURE
One of the best-kept secrets in the Quirimabas is Ibo Island. Once Mozambique’s mighty trading centre, Ibo has been largely ignored by the outside world for almost a century. Wander amongst old forts and ancient buildings in the charming colonial town for a feel of Mozambique history. Until recently, travel into the interior of Mozambique was reserved for only the most intrepid explorer. However, a few adventurous safaris options have begun to open up. Accessed by light aircraft, the wilderness areas of the Niassa Game Reserve and Gorongosa National Park are ideal for adventure seekers and wildlife enthusiasts, and can be easily combined with a stay on one of the islands.
