South Africa: Art In The Cape

This dedicated art tour to the Cape offers a comprehensive introduction to the South African art scene both past and present. Our expert lecturer has lived and worked in Cape Town for more than 10 years and has hand-picked a blend of visits to private art collections and galleries to include a variety of different genres such as the South African masters and contemporary South African art and sculpture. Also included are visits to major attractions that never cease to impress, such as the iconic Table Mountain and the wonderfully scenic Cape Peninsula, plus an unrivalled selection of fine restaurants and wine tasting events.

Day 1 – To Cape Town: Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Cape Town with British Airways. (N)

Day 2 – Cape Town: Arrive and transfer to the historic Vineyard Hotel & Spa for 7 nights. Afterwards, take a short orientation tour of Cape Town, including a cable car ascent of Table Mountain (weather permitting), before returning to the hotel for lunch and a leisurely afternoon. Evening welcome dinner. (D)

Day 3 – Cape Town, Muizenberg & Constantia: This morning, return to the slopes of Table Mountain on a visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, home to a beautiful array of Cape flora and a variety of bronze and stone sculptures. Continue to Muizenberg for lunch at Casa Labia, a 1920s Venetian-inspired residence featuring an extensive local and international art collection. After lunch, continue to the 17th-century Groot Constantia Manor House, one of the finest examples of Cape Baroque architecture. Take a tour of this national monument, which holds early Cape furniture, paintings and ceramics before enjoying the rest of the afternoon back at the hotel. (B, L)

Day 4 – Stellenbosch: Today, drive through the Cape Winelands to Stellenbosch, a leafy university town and one of the major centres of South Africa’s wine making industry. Take a tour of the town centre before visiting the Rupert Museum of Art, which houses a premier collection of 19th-century South African paintings, sculptures and tapestries. Continue to the Vergelegen Wine Estate for lunch and an exclusive wine tasting with the estate’s senior wine adviser. After lunch, take a tour of the homestead and gardens with the horticultural and gardens manager before returning to Stellenbosch in the early evening. Here, a private reception has been arranged with nationally renowned sculptor Dylan Lewis at his foundry. Enjoy a bronze pouring demonstration and talk, followed by drinks and canapes. (B, L)

Day 5 – Cape Town: Enter the quaint suburb of Rosebank for a visit to the museum and former home of Irma Stern (1894-1966), South Africa’s most internationally acclaimed artist. Renowned for her wide-ranging ability of exotic figures, portraits, lush landscapes and still lifes, her colourful African style is conveyed from oil paintings and watercolours to gouache and charcoal. Continue to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, via the Company Gardens and St George’s Cathedral, for lunch at the 5-star Cape Grace Hotel. Afternoon at leisure on the waterfront before taking a sunset champagne cruise around Table Bay. (B, L)

Day 6 – Franschhoek: Drive into the stunning Franschhoek valley for a tour of the Delaire Graffe Estate’s private art collection from South Africa’s most up and coming artists. Continue to Franschhoek for a private tour of the Huguenot Monument and Museum, dedicated to the French immigrants who settled here in the 17th and 18th centuries. Continue to La Motte Wine Estate for wine tasting and lunch. Afternoon transfer back to Cape Town. (B, L)

Day 7 – Cape Town: Morning tour of the Groote Schuur homestead. Built and donated to the state by the legendary colonist, diamond prospector and politician Cecil Rhodes, Groote Schuur has been home to generations of South African heads of state and houses the Cecil John Rhodes Collection – artworks, furniture and library. Continue to the Winchester Mansions hotel for their renowned jazz brunch before visiting the private art collection at the nearby Ellerman House, which features works from a cross section of South African artists both old and new. Day 8 – Cape Peninsula: Full-day tour of the Cape peninsula. Travel along spectacular coastal roads to the Cape of Good Hope, a Unesco world heritage site renowned for its rugged beauty and unique biodiversity. After lunch, visit the penguin colony at Simon’s Town before taking a boat cruise around the scenic Hout Bay. (B, L)

Day 9 – To London: Day at leisure. Farewell dinner at the hotel. Fly to London this evening with British Airways. (B, D)

Day 10 – London: Early morning arrival. (N)

Extensions: South Africa is a country for all tastes and offers boundless opportunities for further exploration. Recommended extensions include a multi-day tour of the Garden Route, a safari in one of the many top class wildlife reserves, exploring the history of the Anglo- Boer and Anglo-Zulu battlefields and / or visiting some of the ancient San rock art sites present throughout the country.
