The Royal Academy of Arts Worldwide Tours

Welcome to the new RA Worldwide Art Tours programme. This collection of expert-led art tours have been created by Cox & Kings for the Friends of the Royal Academy of Arts and other art lovers, and focuses on the art, architecture, archaeology and culture of some of the world’s most fascinating destinations.

The itineraries, which have been created by Cox & Kings’ experts in conjunction with the lecturers who will be accompanying the tours, often concentrate on specific themes or topics. They are designed to appeal to the enthusiast and expert alike, with the aim of enriching your understanding of often complex subjects. It is the expertise and enthusiasm of the lecturers combined with the pleasure of travelling with like-minded people, which will make these tours so fulfilling for lovers of the arts.

In many cases, we have included access to artworks not open to the wider public, or talks by the curators of local exhibitions and there will also be time set aside on most tours to explore further, independently of the group. If you would like to increase the amount of time you have for independent exploration, Cox & Kings’ expert tour consultants will be delighted to arrange pre or post tour extensions for you.

We hope you are inspired by the array of fascinating tours described on these pages and that we will be able to welcome you onto one of our tours in the coming year.

Cox & Kings’ origins date back over 250 years to a decade before the foundation of the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in 1768, making it the world’s longest established travel company. The company’s history began in the summer of 1758, when Richard Cox was appointed as regimental agent to the Foot Guards and set up his base just up the road from Burlington House in Albermarle Street. The company quickly became Britain’s preeminent military agents and in due course its activities evolved to include banking, shipping and, more recently, tour operation.

Cox & Kings’ success has been built upon three main pillars: expertise, personal service and value for money. The expertise and service are provided by the specialist tour consultants in our London headquarters, as well as the lecturers who accompany all the art tours, and the specially chosen local representatives and guides on the ground who ensure that the various travel and accommodation arrangements run smoothly.

The excellent value offered by Cox & Kings is a result of long-standing relationships in the travel industry and a buying power enhanced by the volume of business conducted by the global network of Cox & Kings companies. As a result, Cox & Kings is able to offer the personal service and attention to detail of a small specialist company combined with the commercial advantages of a major worldwide organisation.

Cox & Kings has many years of experience at designing and organising cultural group tours and private tailor-made travel. In addition to general-interest tours, the company has been organising expert-led special-interest groups since the 1970s, including garden tours, wildflower tours and wildlife tours. The first programme of dedicated art tours was created on behalf of the National Association of Decorative & Fine Art Societies (NADFAS) in 1998 and in the years that have followed Cox & Kings has developed a great deal of experience and contacts with the art experts who bring the tours to life. This experience and these contacts form the foundations of the new programme of Royal Academy art tours.

Cox & Kings pays a fee to the RA for every booking on the art tours programme and any booking on any Cox & Kings holiday from a Friend of the Royal Academy, if the Friend lets us know that this is the basis of their booking at the time of enquiry. These funds contribute to the work of the RA and specifically its Education Department.

If you would like to arrange travel to any of Cox & Kings’ specialist destinations, either on a general-interest tour, or on a private tailor-made journey, Cox & Kings’ expert tour consultants will be delighted to advise you of the options. Cox & Kings also has long experience at organising private tours and society tours if you would like to put your own group together.
