KRUGER HIGHLIGHTS

Group Tour, departing Johannesburg
5 days / 4 nights from £710 per person*


Travelling in a small group with expert guiding, this short tour visits Johannesburg, Mpumalanga and Kruger National Park. Transport is in a 15-seater luxury coach except on safari where the group will join a specialist ranger in an open vehicle. This tour could be added to the end of the Taste of South Africa as an extension or used as part of a tailor made itinerary.

Day 1 Sunday:  Arrive Johannesburg. Transfer to Melrose Lodge or similar for 1 night. Optional half-day tour of the Apartheid Museum. Meet the group this evening for a welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2 Monday:  Morning tour of Soweto and visit the houses of Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Lunch at a local shebeen (pub). Afternoon drive to Mpumalanga. Stay 1 night at the Windmill Wine Cottages or similar. (B, L)

Day 3 Tuesday:  Full day exploration of Mpumalanga including Pilgrim's Rest, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Lisbon Falls and Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world. Stay 2 nights at Needles Lodge, or similar, on the edge of Kruger National Park.

Day 4 Wednesday:  Full day game viewing in Kruger National Park in an open vehicle.

Day 5 Thursday:  Optional early morning game drive. Drive back to Johannesburg where the tour finishes.

Minimum 2 passengers, maximum 10. Weekly departures on Sunday.

 Travelling in a group with expert guiding this short tour visits Johannesburg, Mpumalanga, Kruger National Park, Swaziland, Zululand and Durban. Transport is in a 15-seater luxury coach except on safari where the group will join a specialist ranger in an open vehicle.

Days 1-4 Sunday to Wednesday:   As per Kruger Highlights Tour above.

Day 5 Thursday:  Drive south through the independent kingdom of Swaziland, an area of green hills and indigenous forests. Stop en route at a craft market. Overnight at White Elephant Bush Lodge, or similar, in northern Zululand. (B, D)

Day 6 Friday:  Morning boat cruise in the Pongola Game Reserve, with the opportunity to spot hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles. Optional afternoon game drive or walking safari. This area is rich in elephant and rhino.

Days 7-8 Saturday & Sunday:  Drive south, arriving in Durban in the late morning and visit Shaka Marine World, a salt water aquarium. Afternoon at leisure with an opportunity to swim in the Indian Ocean. Overnight at Goble Palms Guest House, or similar. (B)

This tour could be taken as part of a tailor made itinerary. Having explored Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route under your own steam you may like to join a small group for this area of the country.

CRADLE OF THE NATION  

Private Journey, departing Durban
5 Days / 4 nights from £1,595 per person*

 

This is a tour of great cultural variety and scope, tracing the origins of Zulu, Boer and Briton in South Africa through some of the countries major battles. The scenery is spectacular and there is also an opportunity for game viewing. The tour is driven and guided by a specialist historian who will bring to life the people and stories behind the conflicts.

Day 1:  Drive north from Durban via the Tugela River where the roots of the conflict between Zulu, Briton and Boer are presented. Later today is a talk on the culture of the Zulu nation. Stay 2 nights at Isandlwana Lodge. (L, D)

Day 2:  Morning tour of the famous Anglo-Zulu battles of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift. Afternoon account of saving the Queen's Colour delivered on the cliffs above Buffalo River. (B, L, D)

Day 3:  Drive north into the arena of the Boer war, 20 years on. Visit the museum at Tanlana, have lunch at Ladysmith and stay 2 nights at Three Tree Hill, bordering Spioenkop Game Park.

Day 4:  Visit the site of Winston Churchill's capture and the summit of Spioenkop Mountain, arguably the most dramatic battlefield site in the world and where many British lives were lost. (B, L, D)

Day 5:   Morning drive through Spioenkop Game Park and drive the scenic road back to Durban. (B, L)
