Responsible Tourism

Cox & Kings recognises that we have social, cultural and environmental responsibilities to respect the destinations we visit and the people who live there. We believe that our holidays should benefit the local people and their environments and we strive to ensure that the local culture and communities form an integral part of our trips. We wish to maximise the benefits of tourism to each destination, whilst minimising the environmental impact whilst abroad.

Cox & Kings recently received a 3-star award for Responsible Tourism from the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO). To gain this highest possible status, companies must undertake a specific project which contributes to the economy, culture or environment of a destination. This was achieved specifically through our support for Indian charity Magic Bus. We also support charities in a number of the destinations we offer tours to, and are active supporters of Tour Operators For Tigers (TOFT). For details of the local charities Cox & Kings is pleased to support please visit our Useful Links page.

Magic Bus The charity Magic Bus was set up by former Cox & Kings employee Mathew Spacie in January 1999 with the goal of giving street children an opportunity to develop through learning more about themselves and their environment. To this end the charity organises various activities including sports and outdoor recreation. The children benefit from the change of environment and the input of highly trained mentors. Magic Bus is currently helping almost 3,500 marginalised children. For 2009 Cox & Kings will be donating £2 for every person who travels to India on a brochure tour to Magic Bus.

Magic Bus Cox & Kings is delighted to be a member of the Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT) initiative. The organisation has drawn up a code of conduct, which aims to put pressure on ground handlers, lodges and camps to act responsibly with regard to tiger conservation. As part of this initiative, all Cox & Kings' prices for stays in Indian tiger reserves include a donation of £5 per person per night, all of which go directly towards the support of tiger conservation projects. In addition to this, donations can be made directly.
